Radio Faluma Bimetu Reborn!

Submitted by Other Worlds on Mon, 02/08/2010 - 08:58

February 4, 2010
Triunfo de la Cruz, Honduras
Garifuna territory

With two days to go until the re-launching of Radio Faluma Bimetu, there
is a buzz about Triunfo de la Cruz as the community is enveloped by increasing activity and visits of solidarity from international and Honduran collectives, organizations and individuals. Bit by bit, the community radio that was ransacked and left in ashes (on January 6th) after the failed attempt to silence the voices that defend the territory, culture and tradition of the Garifuna community, is beginning to take form.

The freshly painted smoked stained walls of the radio that were damaged by arson are drying a Caribbean sea blue. The radio dj´s, members of the community and a plethora of internationals that came as a brigade, have worked together throughout the week, removing burnt pieces of wood, ashes, and replacing destroyed electrical cables, painting, installing windows, building, sanding, replacing the ceiling and wiring the studios.

On Saturday, February 6th, one month after the attempt to burn it to the ground, the community radio Faluma Bimetu will return to air during a political and cultural celebration during El Encuentro para el Derecho a la Difusión de Nuestras Voces (Gathering for the Right to Transmit our
Voices).

While the drums sound and the smell of machuca (a traditional fish plate cooked with coconut and mashed bananas with special Garifuna seasoning) fills the air, the sun intensifies the energy of the Garifuna radio volunteers from the network of Garifuna radios in Honduras who have been
producing and training in order to strengthen their communication skills. Their productions, coverage and the participation of guests from Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico amongst other places in Mesoamerica will be transmitted live by Radio Faluma Bimetu and on the internet at
http://honduras.mediosindependientes.org and Radio Liberada.

Music, dance, discussion, culture and centuries of struggle will form the integral parts of the celebration of our voices on Faluma Bimetu.

We invite you to connect, listen, call-in, participate and broadcast the
live transmission of El Encuentro para el Derecho a la Difusión de Nuestras
Voces on Saturday, February 2010.
