Nobel Prize for the Commons!

Submitted by Other Worlds on Tue, 10/13/2009 - 12:00

Elinor Ostrom became the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Economics when she was recognized this week for her study of the commons. Her researched proved that, contrary to economic theory, individuals who use resources held in common, like forests or fisheries, are often more successful in protecting them than private companies or government regulation.

Her recognition is a victory for the commons and against pressure to privatize natural resources. You can read more about her at On the Commons
