Share your Alternatives

Here at Other Worlds, we are constantly searching out new alternatives: exciting examples of how people are working together to create more just environmental, economic, and political systems.

Are you involved in a participatory budgeting process in your city? Organizing workers to buy out a factory when the owners want to sell? Linking farmworkers, neighborhood gardeners, and food coops in your state? We want to hear about it!

Give us a heads up about your alternative by filling out this form, or read some user submitted examples below.

Rice Straw for Construction in Haiti

From Leif Rovick

Helping Haitian Rice growers to bale their rice straw to be used as a seismic safe small home construction method. This would allow them to gain value from a struggling crop. Encourage relief agencies to purchase bales from farmers reversing the trend of outgoing monies and helping to rebuild a segment of the agriculture of Haiti. Would like to be personally involved even to working in Haiti to train and share knowledge.

The Global Reconsume Project

From Brandon:

Myself and a few others have designed a business model to redirect the waste from our mass consumption society. Day after day tons of perfectly usable products get buried into landfills while people all around the world desperately need many of these items. What we intend to do is rally core groups to create "common ground" in communities around the world. This common ground will be a place for people to bring their various material goods that are in pass it on condition so that it may be passed back out to the community free of charge.

Meza: Using theatre to link South America, Africa and South Asia

From Nandita Dinesh
I am a theatre maker from India, and have recently finished my M.A. in Performance Studies from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. My work primarily revolves around the use of theatre as a tool for social commentary, and as such, I have been part of projects in India, the US, Northern Ireland, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Mexico, Uganda, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe.

Over the last few years, my work has led me to think a lot about connecting Latin America, Africa and South Asia via the medium of theatre. In order to do this, I have designed theatre workshops that connect these three regions; and I'd be happy to send more details about these workshops to anyone interested.
