A Beer Drinking Revolution - One Pub at a Time

Submitted by Other Worlds on Fri, 04/02/2010 - 13:51

As a wave of consolidation and corporate takeovers has raised prices and closed traditional pubs throughout the UK, with more than 39 pubs closing every week. In response, community members have banded together to save their neighborhood watering holes by forming co-ops. Regulars at the Star Inn in Salford responded to the announcement that their pub was going under by forming a cooperative to buy the bar, complete with shareholders and dividends to be paid in cash or beer. Two other co-op pubs are in the works!

You can read more about how people are using co-ops to preserve pub culture and save local businesses, in this article in the Independant (via On The Commons).
