Resurrecting the Guatemalan Dream

Submitted by Other Worlds on Wed, 09/09/2009 - 12:00

Guatemalan activist Willy Barreno and the grassroots organization Economic Development for a Sustainable Guatemala (DESGUA) are working with campesino communities in Guatemala who are building just, sustainable economies out of the wreckage of decades of civil war and economic imperialism.  DESGUA is helping Guatemalan communities, together with Guatemalan immigrants in the U.S. form cooperatives and produce and market fair trade goods.

You can read more about DESGUA, and watch a documentary about cooperatives growing out of the aftermath of the civil war, in a recent article in Updside Down News.

You can also buy fair trade coffee produced in the Guatemalan community of Santa Anita  (who are working with DESGUA) through the Just Coffee Website.
