Gustavo Castro Soto Bio

Gustavo Castro Soto, Coordinating Committee Member: Gustavo is a sociologist, organizer, writer, and popular educator based in Chiapas. A member of the staff at Educación por la Paz, Gustavo also serves on the coordinating council of both the Movement of Those Impacted by Dams and Defending the Rivers (MAPDER) and the Latin American Network against Dams and in Defense of Rivers, Waters, and Communities (REDLAR). Gustavo has co-founded and co-coordinated a half-dozen Latin American-wide networks for peace, economic justice, and defense of natural resources. He was a member of the negotiating team which won the peace accords between the Zapatistas and the government in 1996, and coordinated support services for Guatemalan refugees. Gustavo is author of several books on displaced people, dams, and water, and more than 300 articles on the situation in Chiapas and globalization. He will also be producing Other World’s Spanish-language popular education materials.
